For most jobs 2 in 5 1 cm x 10 in 25 cm boards are an ideal size.
The rim joist sits vertically on top of the sill plate along the outside of the frame to create a lip for the main floor joists.
Doing so strengthens weak joists and can help straighten sagging joists.
To install the type shown here drive the toothed end into the joist and nail the other end.
Scissor type joists have parallel double pitched top and bottom chords with the ridge at the centerline.
You ll use the same size lumber to assemble the rim joists as you will for the main floor joists.
Repeat the process as many times as necessary to have joists at roughly 16 inch intervals underneath your floor.
